Overview

Insomnia or sleeplessness, is a disorder affecting individuals who are unable to sleep at night.

Insomnia includes difficulty in falling asleep or staying asleep throughout the whole night. Not getting a good night’s sleep causes fatigue and can result in poor productivity the following day. However, sleep patterns are personal and vary greatly between individuals. Healthy adults typically sleep between 7 and 9 hours a day but this varies from night to night

Causes

There are a number of causes of insomnia . These range from personal circumstances, physical and mental health issues e.g anxiety, stress and depression. Taking certain medicines and drugs can cause sleeplessness ( drug abuse, nicotine, alcohol or caffeine)

Risks

The treatments offered by MyMedsUK are better that the older types of sleeping tablets ( e.g. diazepam) in that they have less side effects of next day drowsiness, dependence and withdrawal. Nonetheless, users of these type of sleeping medication should be aware of these effects.

If you think that you are becoming dependent on sleeping tablets, please consult your GP.  It is important that you have a conversation with your GP about obtaining medicine from MyMedsUK. This will ensure that your records reflect what you are taking. It is important in an emergency that health care professionals looking after you are informed about your current medication.

You will not be thought of any less if you disclose this information. If anything, it will help with your treatment. If you are not ready to disclose to your GP, there are a number of confidential helplines available. Frank offers confidential and useful advice on drugs, and support for people who feel that they are dependent on Tranquillisers  and/or other prescription medicines. Treatments

Before taking any medication, please try simple steps like avoiding caffeine containing drinks, relaxing and having a routine before sleep. Over the counter medicines like Nytol and Kalms are effective in treating mild or occasional insomnia. It is recommended that you initially try such medications for your insomnia and only consider taking the stronger medications if these fail to adequately help with your condition. If over the counter treatment is ineffective then an appointment with you GP or specialist doctor may be necessary. MyMedsUK can offer you a variety of treatments using zolpidem and zopiclone

In order to help the MyMedsUK doctors determine if this medication is suitable and appropriate for you, it is important that you answer the questionnaires fully and honestly. This will allow us to supply you with this medication

Please ensure you explain and describe in detail (when asked) what your symptoms comprise of and details about your diagnosis, investigations and what management plan you have agreed with your own GP/specialist with regards to your condition. This is important to allow the doctor to have all the necessary information in order to make the decision about whether it is suitable to prescribe the sleeping tablet to you.

Please note, these type of medicines should only be prescribed for short periods of time. Long term use may lead to complications such as dependence. It may be that if you continue to request the medication from us on a regular basis our doctors will at times decline your request in order to encourage you to seek a medication review with your doctor to ensure this is truly the best medication for you.

Please consult your own GP if you need sleeping tablets on a long term basis
