Understanding Causes of Hair Loss

There is no cure for hair loss.

However, hair loss can be treated using medication which works by slowing down the rate of hair loss.

Hair loss can be caused by a variety of factors, including stressful events, severe trauma and major life events. Illnesses, weight loss and surgery can also cause thinning of the hair, but hair usually resorts back to normal over time. Whilst some people make the decision to wear a wig, others will either treat it via medication or do nothing at all.

Alopecia

Male pattern baldness is a hereditary condition which is passed to males from generation to generation. Females can also experience hereditary baldness (Androgenic alopecia) after menopause and start to see thinning of the hair more than any other symptom.

Overactive Immune System

An overactive immune system can also cause hair loss known as Alopecia areata. In this case, the body starts to attach hair follicles thinking that they are a foreigner to the body. Treatment is not always straightforward and can involve the prescription of steroid creams.

Post-pregnancy

Women who have had a baby may experience Telogen effluvium during post-pregnancy. This is a temporary condition and nothing to worry about as the body’s hormones will adjust back to normal over time.

Vitamin Overdrive & Deficiency

There are some vitamins which can also contribute to hair loss. Large doses of vitamin A and low deficiency of Vitamin B can both be separate causes of hair loss. If a patient is taking vitamin A supplements, they may find their hair loss subsides when they complete their medication. On the other hand, Vitamin B deficiency can be tested for via a blood test. If deficiency is present, eating a high protein diet with more fish and meat can resolve this.

Illnesses & Surgery

As mentioned earlier, illnesses and surgery can also cause the onset of hair loss. Chemotherapy treatment kills cancer cells and hair cells. Many cancer patients choose to wear a hair covering or wig during and after their treatment phases. Hair loss is a common side effect of chemotherapy and patients do not need to take any medication to resolve this, as hair will grow back once chemotherapy has been completed.

Types of Treatment

Finasteride can help hair grow again by oppressing DHT (androgen dihydrotestosterone) which is responsible for thinning hair follicles and hair loss. It is extremely effective if taken daily and is proven to have a positive effect on males who are psychologically affected by baldness or the appearance of a receding hairline.

Finasteride is available to order from MyMedsUK and is available in 28 tablets, 56 tablets, 84 tablets and 168 tablets.
